Come, Holy Spirit

When I was selecting a prayer for a meeting this morning, I went back to the worship book from the latest Lutheran World Federation Assembly: One Body, One Spirit, One Hope, 2023. I found this prayer, and I loved it–it is timeless and timely, and worth sharing. I hope you find a place to use it, too.

Pour out your bountiful Spirit upon your Church;
awaken new visions, deepen our wisdom,
and enliven our faith;
empower young persons and encourage our elders
to share your saving grace in every language on earth.

Send your brooding Spirit upon all creation;
restore and renew the fragile web of life;
guide us to walk humbly on the earth
and to live gratefully so that all living things
may flourish.

Send your Spirit, the Advocate;
shield children everywhere who are at risk;
defend those with little who are trampled
upon by those with much;
stand beside the weak abused by the strong;
and protect all people robbed
of their human rights by those in power.

Send your Spirit of peace upon the human family;
bring civil reconciliation to Myanmar and Yemen;
end the armed conflict in
[Gaza, Ukraine, and all areas of strife and discord around the world].

Send the comfort of your Spirit
to all who suffer in body, mind or spirit;
abide with those who are abandoned, afraid,
or anxious about the future;
console those who are dying
and those who love and care for them

Send the fire of your Spirit into our hearts;
let our work in the world
become good news to the poor,
release of those unjustly held captive,
freedom for those oppressed,
and hope for all who despair.

Giving thanks for all who have gone before us
and are at rest,
rejoicing in the communion of all the saints,
we commend ourselves, one another,
and our whole life to you, O God,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

  1. This is a good prayer today with crazy Trump meeting with Ukraine. Let’s hope he and his crowd will not belittle the president of Ukraine. Love Mom
