Well done, Good and Faithful Servant

I admit, I’m not a fan of politics.

Especially in the last 10 years or so, I find the rhetoric inflammatory and toxic, with much less substance and many more personal attacks and caricatures. I know not all politicians individually are like this, but the political climate certainly doesn’t seem to bring out the best in people, especially when so much of the time actions are meant to further one’s own political career, and continue to divide the country by demonizing those on the other side.

So, I have to say that I was extraordinarily (and, I admit, surprisingly) moved by President Biden’s selfless act, which by all accounts came at quite a personal cost, to step out of the presidential race for the sake of his party and his country. Say what you will about Biden and the Democratic Party, but I think Americans on any end of the political spectrum can and should have appreciation and respect for a politician, a man, who put the health and well-being of the nation above himself and his own desires, listened to and took seriously the advice of others (who were telling him something he absolutely did not want to hear), and prayerfully, faithfully responded.

It was so shocking because it was so unusual. We are used to seeing politicians use whatever means they can to defend themselves and their position, to the bitter end. We are used to seeing politicians cling to their power using all the resources at their disposal for as long as they can. What we saw yesterday was the opposite: stepping back and putting others first; allowing one’s own dream to die for the sake of the dreams of others; letting go of one’s own power to empower someone else. This is extraordinary.

I was also moved by the quote from President Biden’s son:

“For my entire life, I’ve looked at my dad in awe,” Hunter, wrote. “How could he suffer so much heartache and yet give so much of whatever remained of his heart to others?”

He added: “I’m so lucky every night I get to tell him I love him, and to thank him. I ask all Americans to join me tonight in doing the same. Thank you, Mr. President. I love you, Dad.”

In our current political climate, where all too often reward comes by stepping on others to get ahead, sacrificing noble ideals for the sake of political capital and personal advancement, Biden’s action reminded me what the best of our political system can be.

The whole country benefits with two strong candidates in the presidential race, who can give the American people a real choice between policies, vision and leadership style. Biden’s decision furthers that possibility, and gives him the opportunity to use his last months in office to strengthen the health and position of the United States globally and nationally.

So, yes, I say, “Thank you, Mr. President.” And, “well done, good and faithful servant of this nation.”
